Why we love it here
Fun facts about Tampa Bay
We work here and we live here. A few things that make this corner of Florida easy to love.
Tampa Bay is Florida’s largest open-water estuary. More than 200 kinds of fish live in it, and manatees and dolphins are regulars.
St. Pete holds a Guinness World Record for the most consecutive days of sunshine, a streak that started in 1967.
Bayshore Boulevard’s sidewalk is the second-longest continuous sidewalk in the U.S., with water views the whole way.
The first Gasparilla invasion. Every year since, a pirate ship sails into Tampa and the city happily surrenders.
Columbia Restaurant opens in Ybor City. It’s still serving today and is known as Florida’s oldest restaurant.
The Tampa Cuban sandwich adds Genoa salami, a nod to the Italian families who worked alongside Cuban and Spanish cigar makers in Ybor.
Weeki Wachee’s mermaids started performing in the spring about an hour north of Tampa. The show still runs today.
Plant City is the Winter Strawberry Capital of the World, and the Florida Strawberry Festival draws crowds every spring.

Must-sees within about an hour
Beaches, springs, open roads and a real city
That’s the best part of Tampa Bay: you can be on the water, in a cold spring, out between cow pastures or downtown, all within about an hour’s drive.
On the water
The bay, the Gulf and the bridge between them.

Springs & rivers
Spring water stays around 72°F all year.

Where to eat
Tampa Bay’s food is as mixed as its history.
- Middle Eastern on N. 56th Street, Temple Terrace. Jordanian mansaf at Olive Tree by Chef Yousef, grills at Darna, fresh manakeesh at Ramallah Market, baklava and knafeh at Makkah Sweets.
- Ybor City. A proper Tampa Cuban and a café con leche.
- Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks. Greek food and bakeries in one of the country’s best-known Greek-American communities.
Open roads & country
Head east and the city turns into ranch land fast.
- Plant City. Strawberry fields, farm stands and a classic small-town downtown.
- Cattle country. Two-lane roads past cow pastures and orange groves heading toward Polk County.
